places to visit

Dunga Hill Camp

The Hill' is Kisumu's most popular hangout giving a completely different feel of the beautiful lakeside city. It offers arguably the best sunsets in the world. With a 360° view, this is an oasis of nature surrounded by water and a dense papyrus swamp full of wild animals and birds. The Hill is based on the idea of sustainable living and natural habitats. It is a great place to experience the best of the lake and to mingle with the locals who also love this place. Weekends are always a blast with live music and other fun activities. Jet skis and speed boats are available for excursions into the lake. Dunga Hill Camp is 48 km from Pacho.

Nandi Bears Club

If you are a keen golfer then this is a must visit! Guests to Pacho have automatic access to this facility. Opened in 1928, the Nandi Bears Club gained its name from a legend from the Nandi community of a fierce animal called Kerit, an animal resembling a bear and believed to target the heads of its victims. Set high up on hills, the club offers beautiful vistas of the Nyando Plains to the south and the Tinderet Hills to the east and endless, rolling fields of tea. Due to the golf course’s thick fairways and hilly terrain, it turns out to be very challenging to play on. Nandi bears is 38 km from Pacho.

Luanda Magere rock

This is thought to be the final resting place for the fearless and indestructible Luanda Magere: the lion-hearted warrior who belonged to the Sidho Clan that dominated the area around Kano Plains and Nyando Escarpment. This is an important cultural shrine for the Luo Community and a hotspot for traditional rites. Call him myth, but this megastar still features in many tribal traditions, indigenous stories, and fables. The site is popular with people who come to consult the spirit of the man who is said to have been a great warrior. The site is kept alive by traditional war weapons, including a spear and shield, believed to belong to Magere. The site is 46 km from Pacho.

Kisumu Impala Sanctuary

The sanctuary was created to provide a home for threatened Impalas within Kisumu city and its environs. It also provides a safe grazing area for hippos from the lake. The Sanctuary’s focus is herds of impalas, and zebras which roam inside freely. Within the sanctuary is an animal orphanage that hosts a collection of caged lions, leopard, cheetahs, baboons, hyena, jackals, bush duikers, bush buck, and buffaloes. The sanctuary also provides important open grazing for the local hippo population, while the threatened sitatunga antelope exist in the nearby swamps, and can be seen early mornings. With over 115 bird species recorded, the sanctuary is a delight to birdwatchers especially in the morning and late afternoon. There are also several picnic sites within the sanctuary that offer excellent venues for weddings, corporate events, and functions. The Kisumu Impala Sanctuary is 46 km from Pacho.

Ngabunat Caves

Loosely translating to “a secret and hidden hideaway”, Ngabunat is truly a gem of unprecedented beauty and mystique. It is almost incomprehensible that this wonder, straight out of a fairy-tale, is only a lesser-known destination, despite its fetching beauty and enthralling cultural chronicles. There are ten caves at Ngabunat Site, with the most popular being its uppermost one with a picture-perfect waterfall cascading over its mouth. Ngabunat Caves are one of the most culturally important heritage sites in Nandi County, with a history dating back to the 18th Century. It was here that the legendary ‘Mogobich Battles’ between the Nandi and the Ilwasin Kishu Maasai Tribes were staged: to separate the men from the boys.

It was my first time visit to Kisumu County and I wanted a quiet place to escape to, from the busy city buzz, and yet be in a modern setting. I cannot regret!
